Today’s the last full day we have in Trujillo at the Children’s Home this past week doing construction and visiting the different ministries around here was an amazing opportunity that I’m glad to have been a part of. Being here has really made me seen how God has blessed us with such luxurious lives, but he can just as easily take it away, and the important thing is to be able to find joy solely in Him.
We visited the garbage dump today, not only the community around it with the little children, but the actual dump where those children’s parents worked. It was really heartbreaking to see these people scrounge through the garbage to make a living, and it’s hard to imagine that because today was cold, it didn’t smell that bad and there weren’t that many flies, thus meaning that it usually smells much worse and probably even more flies than today.
There were these two women that we approached to give fruit to, except one didn’t lift her head up, even when her friend kept tapping her and telling her to greet us. She just kept sorting the garbage while we gave one of them enough fruit for the both of them. Then even when we were praying, she refused to join us. I don’t know why she did that, but her secretly taking a picture of us while praying gave me an idea as to what the reason was and it just tore me apart.
This was a humbling experience that hit me hard, seeing that while all of our material needs are met, even their most basic needs may not be. Praying for them was especially hard knowing that, but I know with God’s power, they will be able to see the little blessings that they have in our life and that His hand is holding them every step of the way. It made me feel like a hypocrite praying those prayers though, knowing that when we get back, we will most likely continue to splurge our material wealth on luxury things that these people can’t even dream of.
Remembering the times we spent with the children singing the song on thankfulness (tanto song! J ) makes me feel even more blessed to be in the family I was born into, the country that I live in, the water I drink without even thinking twice. My heart goes out to all the children who have the brightest smiles while receiving just a simple t-shirt, or being able to slowly open up to us and play with us, and even going as far as chasing after our bus for a good five minutes. I’ll never forget the joy their cute antics have brought the entire team.
Thank you to everyone who has been supporting us from back home, and I just have one last favor to ask. Please continue to pray for us- that we’d remember all that we’ve seen here and not forget just how blessed and rich we are back in Canada. Thanks everyone and see you soon! (:
